Knowing what you don’t know – on gaps, quality issues, and other challenges in DH use cases

On Monday 27 May 2024, Trifecta PI Marieke van Erp gave the keynote at the First International Workshop of Semantic Digital Humanities (SemDH) co-located with ESWC 2024 in Hersonissos, Greece.

Abstract:
Working with historical data is not for the faint of heart: data can be incomplete, warped through digitisation artefacts, or difficult to understand as language and society have changed. However, it also provides a window on the past that can help us understand today’s society better. In this talk, I will give examples of DH use cases that take on gaps in data, quality issues and other challenges head-first to make computational methods better suited to them.

Now open: Computational Food History Vacancies

Ph.D. Candidate vacancy: https://www.academictransfer.com/en/340228/phd-candidate-trifecta-food-history-dhlab-amsterdam/ Application deadline: 5 May 2024

Postdoctoral researcher vacancy: https://www.academictransfer.com/en/340479/postdoctoral-researcher-trifecta-food-history-dhlab-amsterdam/ Application deadline: 5 May 2024

We’re looking for a Ph.D. candidate and postdoctoral researcher to strengthen our team. We are looking for people with the following profiles:

  • You have an open-minded and collaborative attitude towards doing groundbreaking digital humanities research;
  • You have a firm grasp on computational methods and are willing to achieve proficiency in historical research methods or you are a food historian willing to achieve proficiency in computational methods;
  • Ph.D. candidates will need to have finished their master’s degree, postdoctoral researcher candidates will need to have finished their Ph.D. degree in history, digital humanities, language technology, semantic web or a related field by the starting date of the project;
  • Your English is excellent and you have or are willing to obtain a working proficiency in Dutch.

In this use case, the Ph.D. candidate and postdoctoral researcher will work on Tracing Contentious Entities and Concepts in Food History. This entails developing technology to identify ingredients and food-related concepts from historical resources, as well as analysing how food habits and discourse around food have changed over time. On the digital methodological strand, this sub-project will study the impact of digital processing tools on the hermeneutical practice of historical research. Your work will intersect with the maritime history use case on shared concepts and entities.

Why you should consider working with us:

Location, location, location: Our offices are located in a historical building in downtown Amsterdam. Researchers work together in projects and a shared office space and can choose to spend part of their time at home.

The team: We value a social, open and inquisitive, safe work environment where your input counts, not your job title, this means open conversations about pros and cons of a particular idea and approach based on content, not status. We also brew a mean cup of coffee and the office has a cooking club.

Good to know: Ph.D. candidates are empoloyees in the Dutch academic system, this means that you receive a salary and you’re saving up for your retirement (can’t start early enough!). For postdoctoral researchers working at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences means that you can focus on building your research profile without a teaching load. We do work together with various Dutch universities so some teaching is an option.

About the procedure: Apply via the link provided in the AcademicTransfer.com listing. Please do not provide more information than what is requested (motivation letter, CV, and a publication if you have one). If the committee requires more information, they will ask. The hiring committee will review the applications and invite candidates for an online interview. We will be hiring for this use case as a team, this may mean that the postdoctoral researcher has a more technical background and the Ph.D. candidate a more humanities background or the other way around.

Starting date & duration: the selected candidates are to start between 1 September & 1 November 2024. Both positions are for 4 years.
